Life is like a cup of coffee...

It's a rather grey and rainy day here in Oxford... but that's ok!

The more I think about it, the more life IS like a cup of coffee... It can be sweet, strong, bitter. It can get cold or be piping hot (*wink wink*!).
It can be a cup of weak, uninspiring instant, or bold, rich and flavoursome.
Does yours have frothy milk on top, a bit of whipped cream?

How do you make your coffee?!

Have a great week...

Wonderful Weekend

It's nearly the weekend - yahoo!

The sunshine and warmth continues here in Oxford, and I'm hoping to soak up as much of it as possible over the next few days (because you never know when 'summer' will come to an end!).

May your weekend be filled with warm moments and beautiful memories!

That Monday sunshine-y feeling!

After such a glorious weekend of sunshine and warm weather, I was energized this morning to see that the good weather is set to continue for the rest of the week.

After the months (and, arguably, years!!) of cold, grey weather we've been exposed to, the warm breezes of summer feel amazing.

Let's make the most of it!

Iced coffees anyone?!
Iced Cappuccino

Coffee ice cream?!

Can the NHS learn something from coffee shops??

At least that is what Dr. Johnny Marshall seems to think! (Check out the article at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22796086)

It certainly is an interesting comparison, but Dr. Marshall makes a very good point - patients need to take more control of their own care by becoming more empowered and speaking up for themselves.
While we would think nothing of complaining about a cold coffee at our local cafe, people seem much less inclined to speak up when they feel that they are not receiving a level of care they think they should be getting.

There is no doubt that the NHS is stretched to within an inch of its life, and for many people, the quality of care is very good. But the reality is that sometimes services don't always recognize when their performance isn't meeting their client's expectations. In the NHS context this means things like waiting times that are too long (either sitting for ages in a waiting room or waiting months for a referral to a specialist). It means things like going back to see a doctor repeatedly who doesn't really seem to be truly listening or that you feel very comfortable with. Or it could mean much more significant issues as we've seen recently in the press that puts people's lives at risk.
At the end of the day, each of us is responsible for our own health and we need to take control of it, and this includes speaking up for ourselves when something isn't quite right.

Now there is complaining, and there is complaining... We've all seen someone getting hot and bothered with a receptionist at the doctor's surgery because the GP is running really late. Probably not the best way to convey dissatisfaction with a service. You'll get heard, but probably not for the right reasons.

It's about asking questions, it's about raising issues or concerns in a constructive and polite way, it's about treating others as one wishes to be treated.

I always knew that coffee would fix everything in the end! (Well.... sort of!)

Are you a coffee connoisseur?

So how did you do in last weeks' little quiz?!

Do you know your crema from your cupping? Your pulp from your pull?

Tally up your answers and see how well you know your coffee!

1.     1. Puck (c) - the used grounds from an espresso shot

  1. Knock Box (a) - container used to bang out and store used espresso grounds

  2. Crema (c)- the lightly coloured layer on top of an espresso. Dense crema is the sign of good espresso.
  1. Vintage (b) coffee that has been aged

  2. Cherry (b) the fruit of the coffee plant that contains the beans. Coincidentally, they both turn a gorgeous deep red colour when ripe.

  3. Finish (b) the coffee aftertaste

  4. Affogato (b) ice cream covered with espresso. Sounds so delicious!

  5. Pull (a) to produce an espresso shot

  6. Macchiato (a) espresso with a small amount of steamed milk

  7. Neapolitan (b) a brewing method for very strong coffee

  8. Cupping (a) a method of taste testing that involves slurping coffee off a spoon. Slurping the coffee in this way helps to bring out the depth of flavours.

  9. Quaker (c) bean that fails to roast properly and needs to be removed

  10. Skinny (c) coffee made with skimmed milk

  11. Pulp (c) to remove the outermost skin of the coffee bean, and the outer skin needs to be removed before roasting.

  12. Tamping (a) packing down ground espresso. Tamping is the key to a perfect coffee.

What is your score?
  • Less than 10 = Fair… Are you sure you like coffee?! ;)
  • 11-12 = Good. Maybe you need to do a bit more homework – definitely have a few more coffees!
  • 13-15 = Excellent!! Barista in the making!
